Main When Waste Cannot Be Stopped: The Operation of the “Colorful Bins” Recycling Center During the War

On November 9, 2024, the founder of the Colorful Bins recycling center, Viktor Buchynskyi, was mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This occurred suddenly and unexpectedly, yet it was understood and accepted, as the defense of the homeland is a duty of every Ukrainian citizen.
Despite these circumstances, the operation of the Colorful Bins recycling center was not suspended. Waste cannot simply be told “stop,” and environmental protection remains a priority even during challenging times.

Since 2019, Colorful Bins has been actively promoting the culture of separate waste collection, receiving recyclable materials from the public and sending them for processing. After Viktor’s mobilization, management of the center was taken over by his father, 74-year-old Volodymyr Buchynskyi. With the support of one assistant and remote coordination from Viktor via phone, the center continued to operate without interruption.
For 384 days, the recycling center accepted sorted waste from residents of the Berehivska territorial community. Citizens were able to deposit plastic, cardboard, glass, polyethylene film, aluminum, and tin cans. This ensured that individuals who consciously sort their waste had an alternative, while preventing the accumulation of trash in the region and contamination of local and international waterways.
A key factor in maintaining the center’s operations was cooperation with Diageo, which has supported Colorful Bins since 2022 through the Call Action project, providing material and technical assistance. This partnership made it possible to fulfill commitments not only to the local community but also to long-term international partners. The project team expresses sincere gratitude to Diageo for their trust and contribution to protecting the environment in Zakarpattia.
The impact of the work is measured not only in human effort but also in tangible results — tons of collected and processed recyclable materials. These figures best demonstrate the scale and significance of the activity.
The Colorful Bins team firmly believes that, through joint efforts, all challenges can be overcome, and the environment can be preserved clean for children and future generations.
